Here we go again... my RetroChallenge projects for this month are predictably music-related. I recently purchased a vintage Drumulator, which is an early sample-based drum machine manufactured by E-mu in the early '80s. Aside from it's gnarly sound and Soviet good looks, one of its distinguishing features is that it can be remotely controlled via a serial connection. Since I don't have the software necessary to do this, I'm going to attempt to write my own. This should prove interesting, as I have virtually no knowledge of serial communications, though I do have a bit of experience writing sequencers in 6502 assembly, so I'm not completely without hope.
Another project is to create some new voices for Michael Mahon's RT.Synth. RT.Synth is a 5-bit wave table soft-synth for the Apple IIe which comes with a handful of fairly standard voices. I'm going to do a little experimenting to see what kind of weird and wonderful sounds can be wrought...
If I manage to pull off either or both challenges, I'll hit the studio and do a demo recording. Don't expect too much ;-)
