Didn't have any time for hands-on retro action today, but some of the discussion going on over at the Retro BBS got me thinking about planning for the Summer RetroChallenge.
Turn out has been much higher than I'd anticipated for the current event, which is both encouraging and slightly daunting. On the one hand, we're seeing a steady increase in interest, which is obviously a good thing. On the other hand, it seems the RetroChallenge is on the verge of becoming "serious", which could make the next event more of an administrational challenge.
At present, I'm leaning towards a more structured event for the Summer... Given the increased participation, I think a return to the original RetroChallenge concept is in order (with a few modifications). I like the idea of having several categories of competition -- I'm thinking endurance; creative; programming and hardware. As I see it, the key to making it a success is to avoid the pitfall of being too stringent with the rules. Ideally the next RetroChallenge should be more focussed and coherent without losing the casual fun aspect.
Anyway, just thinking out loud...
