| About the Topic: | In his presentation Ambassador Weekes will review the major challenges facing the WTO after its first two years. Opportunities for advancing Canadian interests in the work of the WTO will be featured as well as efforts by the organization's members to respond to the rapid pace of globalization. Mr. Weekes is WTO Chairman of the new committee on regional trade agreements (like NAFTA) and he will outline how the committee is addressing the challenges regionalism is posing for the multilateral system. |
| About the Speaker: | Ambassador Weekes has extensive experience in leading trade negotiations for the government of Canada having served as Senior Assistant Deputy Minister and Coordinator for the North American Free Trade Agreement in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He was Canada's Chief Negotiator in the North American Free Trade Negotiations, leading the negotiating team for 14 months culminating in the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1992. Prior to that he was Canada's representative at the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations. |
