Abstract: Economists and policymakers have a keen interest in
understanding the factors behind the movement of people
between provinces but migration within provinces accounts
for 62% of total moves within Canada. Does this also
suggest that provincial borders are a substantial barrier
to migration? Recent research at the Bank of Canada sheds
new light on the factors that explain the migration
patterns of Canadians.
