Liquefied Natural Gas: A New Industry for Atlantic Canada
The Association presented a speaker and topic of major local interest
in an expanded venue and audience today. Besides regular membership,
attendance at the event included ministers, mayors and senior provincial
and municipal government officals.
The object of attention was a background report on the feasibility of
LNG terminals in the Maritimes.
In his report, Roland George contends that the supply of natural gas is
not an impediment to development of LNG terminals in the region. The
economics of the projects are subject to the final delivered cost of
the gas. One terminal is a definate possiblity, and a second is feasible.
"Is there room for two? Yes, the market will adjust to it. It depends how
you bring those on."[1]

What: Bank of Canada Monetary Report
Who: David Amirault, Senior Economist, Bank of Canada
Where: Bank of Canada, 1583 Hollis St., 5th Floor
Halifax, April 15,2005
Today, David Amirault presented the Bank of Canada's latest Monetary Report.
In brief, the Bank's outlook is essentially unchanged from the previous
report, except that for increased "upside and downside risks" from Asian
expansion, prices, and the resolution of current account balances.
Of major concern to the audience was the reported lack of labour productivity
growth 2003-2004. As David pointed out, labour traditionally contributes
about 1.25% out of a 3% growth in GDP.

What: Bank of Canada price setting survey
Who: David Amirault, Senior Economist, Bank of Canada
Where: Bank of Canada, 1583 Hollis St., 5th Floor

Each month many of us eagerly await publication of the latest consumer price, industrial products price index and other such harbingers of price changes. Upon reading and digesting the latest statistics we in turn muse or speculate on the causes/sources of current changes. Policy initiatives often are forthcoming.
David Amirault, Senior Economist at the Bank of Canada, recently authored a paper "A Survey of Price-Setting Behaviour of Canadian Companies" and presented an insightful overview to the Association.
The survey found that there is a wide variation in price-setting behaviour among firms. Also, over the past decade there is "evidence of increased price flexibility... owing to intensified competition and greater use of information technologies." [Not to be outdone, David used the latest in technological gismos (ISB jump drive) to deliver his presentation. Slideshow on a keychain.]
Policy implications include that inflation may be more responsive to interest rate changes, and that price flexibility may diminish the effect of monetary policy.

At the January luncheon President David Amirault announced that he will presenting a paper on price stability on February 25 that will coincide with a release from the Bank of Canada. Also, on the "Ides of March" (March 15th) Charlie Pye will be our guest speaker. Et tu Brute?
Today, two approaches to labour market analysis were presented to the overflow crowd.

Cory Large, Economist, HRDC presented a 5 year employment outlook for Nova Scotia. All things being equal, his report estimates that in the next five years the number of positions to be filled due to attrition and economic growth will be 65,000 or an average of +4.5%. Copies of the presentation are available upon request.

David Chaundry, Senior Economist APEC presented an analysis of seasonal employment in Atlantic Canada. He reported that in the period 1980 to 2004 seasonal employment has been stable while full employment has been increasing. Overall, there has been a trend decline in seasonal employment in the region.

And who says that economists cannot agree. In a poll of the assembled crowd, it was decided by a 90%+ majority that pizza was the preferred bill of fare. Future luncheons will feature this culunary delight. To avoid any disappointment, please let Tara know of your favored toppings.

2004 AGM and Luncheon

Today, AAAE President David Amirault presented an up-beat report to a well attended AGM. In this startup year, operational expenditures were abnormally, low resulting in a heathy bank balance. A good foundation for the coming year.
A luncheon schedule for this fall is taking shape with three events already planned. Bob Newcombe will be giving a presentation on the state of the offshore; David Amirault will be presenting a Bank of Canada report; and Tim O'Neil has offered to give a talk later in the fall.

The 2004-2005 board of directors was elected by acclamation. All directors from last year's board reoffered except one - Wambui P. Kipusi who has left the province. Ruth Blades was recruited to bring the board up to full complement.
David offerred the thanks of the board to Secretary/Treasurer Tara Ainsworth for her dedication and hard work over the last year. "She's the glue that holds the society together".

After the AGM Fred Morley and Betty MacDonald teamed-up to present a report from the Greater Halifax Partnership on the state of the economy in the HRM.
