Halifax in 1982:

On July 29, 30, & 31, 1982 the 3rd Canadian National Square & Round Dance Convention was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the Metro Centre, Lord Nelson, St. Pat’s and Queen Elizabeth High Schools.

The dress for the ladies was a light blue skirt with white Bluenose silhouettes painted on, a white blouse with sailor collar, blue tie and navy, light blue and white rickrack trim. The gents wore light blue pants, white shirt, belt and shoes, with a light blue tie.

The badge was royal blue showing the Bluenose in the harbour below the Old Town Clock.

The logo used was the relatively new Canadian Square and Round Dance Society logo, which is two dancers inside a circle on a white maple leaf on a red square.

At the Ottawa presentation "C U in 82" was painted on the sails of the dory.

5565 dancers registered, 401 cancelled with refunds, 5055 attended.



Halifax in 1994:

The 9th Canadian National Square & Round Dance Convention was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the World Trade and Convention Centre and Metro Centre on July 21, 22, & 23, 1994.

The dress for the ladies was a short gored Nova Scotia Tartan overskirt trimmed with white lace over a white underskirt, and an individually designed white blouse trimmed with tartan. The gents wore royal blue pants, with white shirt, belt and shoes and a tartan tie.

The badge was white with a blue outline of Nova Scotia showing a lighthouse and our slogan.

The slogan was “Dance By the Shore in '94"

The common symbol used in advertising was either a photograph or sketch of the Peggy's Cove lighthouse.

Saint John, NB in 2002:

On July 18, 19, & 20, 2002 the 13th Canadian National Square & Round Dance Convention was held in Saint John, New Brunswick at Harbour Station and the Saint John Trade & Convention Centre with square dancing also in the Delta and Masonic Hall and round dancing also in the Y.M.C.A. and High School.

The dress for the ladies was a short 8-pointed overskirt of specially designed covered bridge material over a lace edged white skirt, with white blouse. The gents wore black pants with a white shirt trimmed at the shoulder with the covered bridge material and a tie of the special material.

The badge was white with green lettering and an added pin showing a coloured version of the logo.

The slogan was "The Place for you in 2002".

The logo was a circle with the slogan around the outside and a covered bridge in the centre.

About 2900 dancers attended.



Major Steps on the Road to Halifax National Festival 2010

August 7th, 2005 - Executive Meeting of the Square & Round Dance Federation of Nova Scotia held in Tusket, Nova Scotia after the Yarmouth Festival 2005.

Motion (seconded): That SRDFNS prepare a draft letter of intent for hosting 2010 at Halifax and submit it at the October Federation AGM. The Federation as a whole and all of Nova Scotia must approve this proposal.
Discussion: A survey form is to be sent to all clubs with the end of August federation mailing. We need data on dancer interest before making a decision on undertaking this proposal.

Motion carried.

Motion (seconded): Wayne and Dianne Burns to be Chair Couple for the Festival 2010 undertaking.

Motion carried unanimously.

October 15th, 2005 - Square and Round Dance Federation of Nova Scotia AGM at South Woodside Community Centre, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Motion (seconded): That SRDFNS submit a bid to the National Society to host a convention in 2010 in Halifax.
Discussion: Survey results to date were discussed and reported to be positive.
   A preliminary budget was discussed showing financial feasibility.
   Finding a way to provide sufficient hard surface flooring had been investigated and tentative solutions had been found.

Motion unanimously approved.

October 20th, 2005 - Ralph MacDonald, Nova Scotia's Representative to the National Society, e-mailed notification of our intent to submt a bid to Norman & Loretta Demeule.

Subsequent e-mails established that no other province wished to bid for 2010 and our bid was fast-tracked to be considered at the CSRDS AGM in Charlottetown, PEI.

November 12th, 2005 - Bid presented by Wayne & Dianne Burns and Dottie Welch to the Canadian Square & Round Dance Society AGM in Charlottetown, PEI held in conjunction with the 36th Maritime Square & Round Dance Convention. The Bid was officially accepted and approved by the Society.
