Cobequid Twirlers Square Dance Club of Truro was started in 1973 by four couples: Don and Olive Bowness, Ralph and Marilyn Smith, Art and Roberta Lindsay, and Reg and Jenny Borden. A large number of prospective dancers attended an Open House at St. David's United Church on the Pictou Road, a Club was formed with Don and Olive Bowness as co-presidents, and Ralph and Marilyn MacDonald as co-treasurers. The first official caller was Vern Carmichael. Twenty four couples and four singles graduated in 1974. Dancing took place at the Bible Hill Elementary School.
Vern Carmichael was the Club Caller from 1973 to 1980. Hilton Macintosh began calling in 1980 and continued until December, 1991. Carson Spicer began calling in September of 1991 and continued calling until December 1991. Carson was followed by Cathy Anderson who called from 1992 to 1996. During the period 1992-93 Bob Fiddes began calling and alternated with Cathy Anderson between Class and Club Calling. In September of 1996 Barry Bendle assumed the Caller position and he and his wife Dyanna have endeared themselves to us since that date.
