The Rainbow Dancers Club began in the Welsford Communtiy Hall (formerly the Welsford school) in 1965. Don and Lousie Haley were our caller couple. The first year 28 dancers graduated. Our name RAINBOW DANCERS was suggested by Lousie Haley. Our club soon outgrew the Welsford Hall and moved to the Somerset and District school in 1967 at which time we graduated four squares of Junior Rainbow Dancers, a few are still dancing today. In 1994 we moved to the Woodville Community Hall where we are today. Our regular dance night is Monday.
We have celebrated many birthdays with a guest caller and had special celebrations on the 20th, 25th, 30th, and 35th. The 30th birthday was a really special event when we honoured Don and Lousie Haley. Callers were invited from all over the Martimes and paid tribute to Don. They were presented with a plaque and numerous gifts. The following year Don retired and The Haley Dancers joined our club in a retirement party where Don and Lousie were presented with a "Memory Book" full of pictures of their activites over the years. We were very fortunate when Nelson and Pat Labor became our new caller couple in 1996. We all enjoy Nelson's calling.
The Rainbow Dancers have been very active dancers and we enjoy travelling. Some have danced in Japan, USA, Hawaii, and all over Canada. A number of us travelled to the convention in Edmonton in 1996 by trailer which was organized by Nelson and Pat Labor. We have assisted with the 1982 and 1994 National Nonventions held in Halifax, the MCCA Martime Conventions, Apple Blossom Festival and the annual Dance for Hearts. We have visited and danced at the Grand View Manor and Seaforth's Rest Home as well as the summer travelling guests at the Old Orchard Inn.
This year (2001) we will celebrating our 36th birthday at the Waterville Fire hall on Saturday, May 19,2001. We will be dressing and decorating in our Rainbow colours and renewing old friendships and happy memories.
