Strathmor Strutters is a caller run club under Bob & Phyllis Fiddes that was first formed as a Plus club in the fall of 1992. In the Spring of 1993 the first graduation took place and in the fall a DBD Mainstream club was formed where dancers danced all calls all ways. Up to the end of May 1995 all dancing was held at the Princess Margaret Rose school in Truro on Monday and Wednesday nights. In the fall of 1995 the mainstream dancing on Monday - evenings was moved to the callers residence in Lower Onslow. In the beginning it was only possible to dance a few squares but that fall "Bobs Hall" as it is now known, was enlarged to dance six squares. In January 1996 a class of 4 couples started with all couples graduating regular Mainstream Level in November.
In the fall of 1996 Wednesday evening Plus dancing moved to "Bobs Hall" and new class teachings changed to Thursday evenings. The club has had a class of at least 3 or 4 couples for Basic and Mainstream since 1996 as well as a Plus class in 1998 bringing the club membership up to 62 members.
In the fall of 1998 a kitchen and office complete with refrigerator, stove and microwave was added on to "Bobs Hall". Now the year 2000 may possibly see one more expansion so as to accommodate 8 or 9 squares.
The dance floor in "Bobs Hall" consists of a concrete base with felt underlay and two layers of plywood, which when you dance, the floor springs with your steps. Bob Fiddes, the club caller, first went to callers school in the Summer of 1991 to "The House of Roth" run by Gloria Roth. He then went to the "Hayloft" callers school in Massachusetts, run by Randy Page and Ken Rittuci. He is a member of ANSSRDT, MCCA, SOCAN, and CALLERLAB. His wife Phyllis dances both ladies and gents parts at all levels.
Bob and Phyllis are proud of their club dancers and both say the dancers keep the club going by always being lively and interested in each other as well as dancing and willing to lend a hand at any job large or small. Every third Monday of each month we celebrate that months birthdays with Birthday Cake and Ice Cream. We always have the tea pot and coffee pot on each evening as well as a cookie or two for lunch, sometimes a lot more. All Square Dancers from any club are welcome to come and join us any evening and we look forward to meeting new friends.
