******************************* CHAIR'S REPORT FOR MAY: I know that there was concern from both Board Members and the school communities when the province announced new school construction over a five year span and the Halifax Regional School Board was not on the list. I have been in contact with Doug Nauss of the Department of Education and there is a meeting scheduled for May 31st. At that time, I will be re-iterating my concern that the Halifax Regional School Board has two distinct needs regarding school buildings. One need is for new schools to be built in areas where there is severe overcrowding. The Department of Education has addressed that need. The second need, which is becoming just as pressing, is for replacement schools to replace old buildings and/or assistance with major capital projects. The province has not met this need. School facilities were identified as a major priority by both parents and Board Members during consultation regarding the budget. We need assurances from the province that they will assist the Halifax Regional School Board with our facilities. I know that both our Board and the Department of Education have students as their first consideration so feel confident that consultation with the Department will result in a solid, long-term plan. Secondly, the Superintendent and I did a brief presentation at Council. We will be arranging to meet with members of Council and Department of Education officials later in June to discuss the issue of supplementary funding. I know that when the issue of supplementary funding comes up, everyone appears to have some level of discomfort. Parents and staff where supplementary funding is collected are afraid that programs will be decimated with its' loss. Parents and staff where dollars are not collected appear to have ambivalent views. I feel there is a need to examine this issue. I would ask everyone to remember that simply examining an issue will lead to greater understanding. Stella Campbell Chair Halifax Regional School Board
