SPTN Summer Institute 98

Often, with today's hectic scheduling, it is hard to find the opportunity to consult with colleagues; ... maybe you are the only science teacher at your particular Grade level....maybe you are teaching science for the first time....maybe science is just one of several subjects you have been assigned... or maybe you are an experienced science teacher who simply needs to recharge the batteries!

Planning has just begun for the 7th Annual SciencePlus Teachers' Network Summer Institute, to be held on the campus of Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, from July 5 to 10, 1998.

SPTN believes strongly in teachers helping teachers; and in giving participants time to work with colleagues on areas of mutual interest. In keeping with that belief, we will provide a combination of presentations, panels, and time for small group discuss ion and project development, along with a generous helping of good company and fun.

As always, our main focus will be on how children learn, and a large part of the week will be spent in group sessions exploring four main areas:

New teachers will form separate groups to deal with their particular concerns, and teachers of French Immersion will have opportunities to share ideas and curriculum material with experienced peers.

New Brunswick teachers involved in teaching the FOUNDATION PROGRAM (Grades 9, 10) will meet to discuss issues arising from their experiences.

NOTE: In response to requests from last year's participants, we are extending the Institute by one full day, and including a geology FIELD TRIP to Parrsboro; participants will have an opportunity to visit Fundy Museum, collect samples for use in the class room, and explore the broader issues of planning and conducting a successful outdoor learning activity.

In short, whether you are new to SP, or have been teaching it for years, this Institute has something for you!

Here's what some of last year's participants had to say:
"The Institute inspired everyone to collaborate together. I loved the open nature of fellow teachers and willingness to share. We don't often get that in our schools."

"...humor and fun is a wonderful medium through which to grow"

"I was scared to death when I was told I had to teach Science; now I can hardly wait to begin. I found everyone was super friendly, willing to share ideas and help answer my many questions"

Brochures will be sent out to Schools, as well as past participants, later in February, so if you have not received any information by mid-March, or if you would like to receive your own copy directly, please contact Frances Wallace (coordinator)
