Friends of Hemlock Ravine

Hemlock Ravine Park is an 85 ha. natural park overlooking the Bedford Basin at Prince's Lodge. It was created in the 1970s to preserve a stand of old-growth hemlocks and to provide passive recreational opportunities. The park is rich in history. The heart-shaped pond was once part of a pleasure garden created by Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent and father of Queen VIctoria.

The Friends of Hemlock Ravine Park Society (FHR) was organized in the late 1990's as a result of concerns arizing from the cutting of old-growth forests on adjacent property and the effects it would have on the park. Since its conception the FHR has been involved in the development of the Parks Management Plan, and has worked closely with local politicians and Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) on mantainance and ecological issues.
