On Saturday, November 4, you are invited to join members of
Industrial Heritage Nova Scotia for a tour of several historical
industrial sites on and near the lower Indian River, near Head of St.
Margaret's Bay, Halifax County. The trip will take place rain or shine,
and will involve less than one km of walking in rough terrain. Hiking or
rubber boots are strongly recommended.
Indian River, the once-famous salmon river, and the nearby Northeast
River, were dammed and diverted in the 1920s to provide electricity to
power-hungry Halifax. The visit will include a guided tour, courtesy of
Nova Scotia Power, of the Mill Lake powerhouse, a part of the St.
Margaret's Bay Hydro System and one of the oldest power plants in the
province still in service; in addition to the site of the former Sandy
Lake sawmill and of the magnificent Sandy Lake log sluice. The latter
was used to transport logs and pulpwood over the hydro dam and is
probably the last remaining intact structure of its kind in Nova Scotia.
There is a limit to the number of participants to the 10:00 AM
powerhouse tour and therefore pre-registration is required. The second
portion of the excursion starts at 11:30 AM. Contact the undersigned if
you'd like to take part. There is no charge.
