Laurie,
I have looked at the trackings. Very interesting.
Did I miss it or were the goals of the project never explained. I mean, =
we knew they were going to Tristan da Cunha. Could you explain the goals =
and are more birds to have satellite collars in the future? How long =
will the batteries last?
Thanks for any info.
Pete

Toanswer your question, the tracking program is supposed to filter out =
poor satellite fixes but some seem to have gotten past the filter since =
it is unlikely the birds flew across land and back. I haven't looked at =
the data myself but the quality of each is recorded and I am assuming =
this is the case.
The first shearwater to reach Tristan da Cunha is Sedna but she/he may =
have lost her/his tag coming and going from the burrow or it simply fall =
off since there hasn't been a signal for several days or perhaps she/he =
is staying in her/his burrow. If the tag has fallen off this is =
unfortunate since there were several more weeks of battery life left on =
the tag. However, overall we are very pleased with the longevity of the =
tags so far.
One shearwater (Kaiva) is still off the coast of Argentina. =20
Although the names of the birds may imply a particular sex for each =
bird, we have yet to sex each one and are hoping to do so through =
genetic analysis of blood samples.

Hi Laurie,=20
Very interesting. Perhaps you can refresh our collective memory (at =
least mine, who seems to have forgotten this) as to what the reasons is =
for the apparent movement of some of these birds inland across large =
distances of the southern South America peninsula?
Cheers!
Chris
