On the morning of Saturday, February 3, Dave McCorquodale and I did a bit of birding around HRM, mainly on the Eastern shore, in intermittent rain. The wind was light until the afternoon, so reasonable birding weather. Highlights were:
Northwest Arm and Dartmouth Cove:
1 Great Cormorant at each location
Dorothea Drive, Dartmouth:
N. Cardinal - 1 female still present
Song Sparrow - at least 6
White-throated Sparrow - at least 2
Conrad Marsh:
N. Pintail - 1 female
mink - 1, very active, swimming and loping on the ice - made a dash at a female Red-breasted Merganser
Lawrencetown River:
Am. Wigeon - 10
Three Fathom Harbour:
Greater Scaup - 15, at Rocky Run
Belted Kingfisher - 1, at Dottie's Pond
scoters - all 3 species in small numbers, in the outer harbour
Black-bellied Plover - 1, seen from Causeway Road
Canada Goose: approx. 900 total, from Conrad Marsh to West Chezzetcook
Cheers,
Susann Myers
