Dear All, Aug 6, 2007
This seems to be a good year for 5-fingered Ivy (_Parthenocissus
quinquefolia_) because Bees (and some Wasps) are unusually attentive
(unless I have missed this feeding previously) where the plant has good
light exposure and has flowered well. [The same species growing up a
wall that faces 30o E of N has never flowered; could be a combination of
recurrent pruning as well as light exposure in this case.]
About a week ago many Bumble Bees (50-100) were working Ivy that has
grown up a Black Cherry and this continued off and on for several days.
On Aug 4 we saw many Bumble Bees, several Honey Bees and Yellow Jackets
in town, working _P. quinquefolia_ that has grown along a wire fence.
There were many immature fruit but no flowers at this point so nectaries
at the base of the ovary may continue to be active after the corolla is
shed. Or it may be just residual nectar.
