Subject: [NatureNS] Tour of Valley Ponds
Hello,
Wendy and I did a tour today of some of the ponds and sewage lagoons =
in the Eastern Valley. A few highlights:
Windsor sewage lagoons:
- C. Goose - ~155
- A. Wigeon (pair)
- RT Hawk - 2 flew overhead
- House Sparrows at Tim's
Grand Pre:
- Snow Buntings - huge flock of ~200
- Horned Lark - 2 small flocks (total of ~50)
- Savannah Sparrow (1) - in the midst of the Horned larks
- flock of ~200 shorebirds flying along the shore of Boot Island - =
too far to ID
Port Williams sewage lagoons:
- Mallard (~65)
Van Nostrands Ponds:
- RN Duck (1 f)
- Bald eagle flew over
Harris's Pond:
- C Goose (~60)
- Hooded Merganser (5 f/imm)
- RN Duck (1 f)
Saxon Street Pond
- lots of Mallards and Black Ducks
- N. Pintail (2 males, ? females)
- RT Hawk (3) - looking over the ducks
- Bald eagle (2) - also checking out the ducks. When one of the =
eagles took off, so did all of the ducks along with
- GB Heron (1)
Canard Pond - we hit paydirt, although as usual the ducks were in the =
north east corner:
- A Wigeon (2 pairs)
- Gadwall (1 pair)
- N Shoveler (1 pair)
- N Pintail (at least 14; 10 m, 4 f)
- GW Teal (~80 !!)
- A Coot (1)
- the usual Mallards and Black Duck - not counted
In total there must have been close to 1500 gulls in this general area =
- either on the Pond or in the fields behind on Fred Thomas Road. We =
tried to get a better look but didn't locate any LBBG's.
A cool day with the wind but we always enjoy our forays to the Valley.
Cheers,
Bob McDonald
