Hi all:

Sorry to have missed Richard and company. It was a good day with 42 specie=
s. Highlights were a peregrine falcon in Lunenburg. Of course I forgot th=
e camera and it was one of the best looks at this bird that I have ever had=
. It was sitting on a snow bank no more than 10 feet from the car. It tha=
n flew up onto a telephone pole and perched there for a long time before la=
nding on the other side of the street along the sidewalk. It was by the ve=
terinary clinic just as you enter Lunenburg. It flew off with a rock pigeo=
n shortly after. All present except those who left early got to see the bi=
rd.

We had two species escape. I believe the one species was five white-winge=
d crossbills, but they lifted off before others in the party could zone in =
on them. These birds were by National Sea Products. There also was a larg=
e group of waxwings near Maders Cove, but they went out of sight and could =
not be relocated so species could not be determined. =20

Sylvia Fullerton picked out a white-crowned sparrow from a group of other s=
parrows we found at one location in Lunenburg. =20
=20
Three northern cardinals were also a treat. One gave us a fleeting look on=
ly, but the other two were very co-operative with the male displaying for t=
he female in Oakland. =20
=20
Maders Cove gave a great close up comparison of a female common merganser, =
two hooded mergansers and a bufflehead all side by side. =20
=20
Four purple finches at the location of the white-crowned sparrow were also =
a treat.
=20
There were lots of red-tailed hawks about. =20
=20
There were two northern pintails at Mason's Beach and an additional male as=
reported by Richard and company on the Lunenburg waterfront.

The other day iceland gulls were all over the place in greater numbers than=
I have seen here all winter. On the day of the outing only one could be l=
ocated and there was no sign of the two glaucous gulls I had seen on the pr=
e-scout.
