Thank you, thank you, thank you,
for finding that priceless hoax. I have been wanting to see it again ever
since it first aired in 1957 on the very serious BBC program Panorama. It
was extremely well done and sounded exactly like a documentary of the time.
I remember my fathers reaction to it. He was livid and stormed round the
house yelling" I KNOW spaghetti doesn't grow on trees! Where did they get
this from? When it was pointed out that it was April 1st, he dismissed the
idea, "the BBC doesn't play tricks".
I thought I was going to burst. Huge numbers of people were taken in and
they tried a few other schemes in subsequent years, but by then their
reputation had changed.
