Hi Margaret & All, Apr 20, 2008
Bee abundance is highly time and place dependent. Honey Bees in the
yard were at usual abundant this year on sunny, warm, calm periods as
long as the Crocus was in ample bloom. Now that the Crocus flowering has
started to taper off so has Honey Bees abundance, regardless of weather.
So far this year in the yard I have seen only several putative
Andrenids; working Crocus on Apr 16. Today we walked for about an hour
and saw none at all until we reached a large, south-facing sandy bank
that was sheltered from wind (just north of the Cornwallis bridge in
Kentville and west of the traffic lights) where there were well over
1000 Andrenid-like bees in view at any one time; mostly buzzing about
low to the ground, emerging from or entering into newly excavated or old
burrows and in ~5 minutes ~5 pairs mating. I have walked past there in
summer at least 400 times over 40 years and recall seeing only scattered
individuals previously.
