My boyfriend Jeff and I stopped in at Bellisle Marsh on our way back =
from
Bear River last Thursday, and had the pleasure of watching four or five
American Bitterns feeding in the marsh. We knew something good was =
going to
happen, because neither of us had cameras with us (which is always the =
way).
=20
We were watching the Bitterns from the Jeep when to our surprise, one of
them flew from the other side of the marsh, flew right towards us and =
landed
right on the shore just below where my Jeep was parked. It couldn=92t =
be seen
while sitting in the Jeep, but not wanting to get out and flush the bird =
we
stood up on the seats (the top was down), and very slowly peered out of =
the
open roof down over the bank. Then we caught sight of it, and had =
wonderful
long looks at it close up! It had big white patches on its =
shoulders=85I had
never seen this before, and my Sibley field guide didn=92t show this =
plumage
either. So I was all excited thinking we had found something rare and
couldn=92t wait to get home to look it up on the net! Then I found out =
that
American Bitterns get white patches on their shoulders when they are in
breeding plumage. Oh well - nothing rare but a wonderful experience for =
us
both nonetheless!
=20
Another great sight was a female Hooded Merganser with a brood of =
chicks.
Bobolinks and Yellow Warblers were everywhere, I could hear a couple of
Soras and Pied-billed Grebes calling out in the marsh, and there were =
some
Blue-winged Teals, Ring-necks and Northern Shovelers too. We also saw a
Northern Harrier.
=20
Cheers,
Cindy
