The "flying insect" (2008_0624wildlife0053 & 2008_0624wildlife0058) is  
a beetle, almost certainly a soldier beetle (Cantharidae), possibly  
Atlantycha bilineata (Say) or a related species, but the photographs  
are not distinct enough to be certain.
