First off another red-bellied woodpecker showed up yesterday at Blockhouse.=
This time a male. That makes four in this area that I now know of. One =
at Mahone Bay=2C one at Blockhouse=2C and two in Lunenburg.

I've had an interesting story about blue jays and a sharp-shinned hawk inte=
raction. My reportee says that every day for a week a sharp-shinned hawk h=
as been trying to apprehend jays at her feeder. The jays come to the feede=
r and wait for the hawk. One jay diverts the hawk away from the feeder whi=
le the others come in and enjoy a meal. The jays seem to return to the fee=
der oblivious to the hawk=2C which appears to be a juvenile. The hawk has =
not been successful at all with any of the jays at the feeder over the past=
two weeks. The blue jays every day have been defecating on the hawk. I k=
now that fieldfares will do this (Nature Series on Birds by Attingwood)=2C =
and that this is a defensive mechanism in some other species of birds also=
=2C but I've not heard of this in regards to blue jays. I've done a lot of=
looking and a lot of reading in regards to blue jays and cannot find any r=
eference to this defensive mechanism within that species. Therefore=2C is =
it possible that this is a defensive mechanism developed within this small =
group of jays at Riverport only=2C or is it a fact that nothing has been do=
ne in regards to a study=2C as we have not witnessed or had the opportunity=
to observe this trait in blue jays. It might in fact be very common and w=
e do not know about it due to lack of study of observations. If anyone els=
e has any input on this or knows of any studies being done with blue jays i=
n this regard I would very much like to know about it.
