Hi all:
=20
I had an interesting observation related to me. Apparently a gentleman was=
in his tree stand bow hunting. While there he noted two squirrels busily =
dropping cones from the top of a very thick evergreen tree. Every now and =
then these two red squirrels would chase one another around and around the =
tree. After a time the hunter noted a northern goshawk. This bird proceed=
ed to land on the lower branch of the thick evergree tree and hopped from b=
ranch to branch up into the tree. After a time a big commotion occurred. =
All of a sudden the northern goshawk appeared again on the bottom branches =
of the tree with one of the squirrels in talon. The goshawk had descended =
the tree branch by branch after apprehending the prey. This method of hunt=
ing for a hawk is definitely new for me and I've never heard of such an occ=
urrence before. From a scientific perspective it would be nice to know if =
any studies have shown other goshawks using this method of hunting to obtai=
n prey from hard to get at locations.

A number of years ago=2C I watched as a northern goshawk killed a duck in t=
he middle of a large lake. The duck being too heavy to lift=2C it grabbed =
the bird in it's talons and back stoked with the wings to shore=2C where it=
proceeded to eat the duck. If I had not seen such I never would have beli=
eved such a thing as possible.
