We had a great weekend for birding; I had much fun at the beginners bird
walk, Saturday the 25th at the Frog Pond. We saw American goldfinches,
kinglets, (golden or ruby-crowned, I can't remember,) a noisy flicker, palm
warblers, a raven, crows, grackles, song sparrows, a hairy woodpecker,
red-breasted nuthatches, blue jays, robins, several pairs of chickadees
hollowing out their nests in dead birch trees, (see Stephen Cooke's photos
on our blog: http://www.birdsareback.blogspot.com
<http://www.birdsareback.blogspot.com/> ,) and painted turtles out on the
rocks sunning themselves. (Smart turtles.) Also mallard and black ducks.
On Monday I saw my first osprey of the season, (hovering but not diving,),
yellow-rumped warblers, as well as a small dead tree packed with four
growling raccoons.
I have had a number of reports of red-bellied woodpeckers in and around the
Frog Pond. Rumor has it that they've been there for a few years now.
Cheers; happy spring, Noel Taussig.
