Hi Jim and all
By late winter I actually mean late 1st-winter in plumage not in time. I supose there is a better term like first cycle. The birds were very white with all black bills and dark eyes. We usually get a few on migration count day so they are not late as far as time is concerned. The adult was a L. glaucoides glaucoides with no dark markings on primaries. Maybe Eric M. might give us a lesson in the more up-to-date way to describe gull plumage.
Since both Peter and Murray had Swifts today, I went to check the Temperance St. school chimney tonight, but I did not see any in the period between 8:15- 8:35, but I may have arrived too late as the clouds tonight made darkness come earlier than the last night I checked.- a couple of days ago.
cheers
ken

Ken, I wonder about your "late first winter Iceland Gulls" -- what would they be late for? I imagine it's not unusual for immature Icelands and Glaucous Gulls to linger much beyond when the adults take off for the far north (Arctic, including High Arctic), where the breeding season is so short that they want to be there when the season allows them to start nesting. I know -- a minor point.... Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Hi all
I managed to get out for a couple of hours in the Pictou area today ( May 2, 2009). I had some spring firsts:
2 Willets at Waterside PP
1 Blue-headed Vireo at Ferry Rd.
1 Chipping Sparrow- Haliburton
1 Broad-winged Hawk- Ferry Rd. very tame!
2 Common Terns- Lyons Brook
There were 5 late first winter Iceland Gulls and 1 adult at Pier C. Greater Yellowlegs were numerous in both Lyons Brook and Central Caribou.
