Hi James;
Bank Swallow is BANS
and Barn Swallow is BARS
There are always a few exceptions to the rule of using the first two letters of a two word name - for the very reason you mention: more than one species would end up with the same initials.
The one that gets me is: BTNW - Blk-throated Green Warbler - to distinguish from Blk-thr Grey Warbler, maybe?
For your reference, there's a list of species codes on the Atlas website under resources > coding sheets.
Cheers;
Suzanne
