Just to add to Richard's post, the return migration of greater =
shearwaters from their nesting islands in the South Atlantic should be =
revealed this spring with 22 greater shearwaters being tagged this fall, =
as long as the tags work as suggested =
(http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/?project_id=3D452). I suspect it =
will be very similar to the return flight pattern for the Arctic terns. =
Right now, the corridor between the Patagonia coast along South America =
and the South African coast are frequented by these shearwaters both =
before nesting and during and it is not unusual for birds to travel =
great distances, unlike when they are in the Bay of Fundy when their =
movements are restricted to a small area. Food resources no doubt are =
harder to find and necessitate longer flights than in the Bay.
The data loggers used on the puffins and terns have also been used in =
the Bay of Fundy on razorbills and Leach's storm petrels. The birds =
must return and be recaptured to remove the data loggers unlike the =
satellite tags which broadcast their location daily. Often the tags are =
lost or damaged and no information is recovered but their small size =
(and weight) is the key to their use. Some of the preliminary returning =
information for the Leach's storm petrels indicate feeding trips that =
are several hundred kilometres and range as far as George's Banks from a =
nest site off Grand Manan Island.
Rob Ronconi, who has been the lead researcher with the shearwater and =
gull tracking in the Bay of Fundy, will be talking about his 3.5 month =
stay in the South Atlantic studying various nesting pelagic seabirds, =
and in particular greater shearwater, at the Saint John Naturalist Club =
meeting on Feb. 8 but I'm sure he would make a presentation in Nova =
Scotia if invited. He lives in Halifax. If a group is interested, let =
me know and I will give you Rob's contact information.
By the way, all three herring gulls are now in the Chesapeake Bay area. =
Their flight to the area was very uniform with all three making a =
beeline from about New Hampshire to New York overland and then =
continuing overland past New Jersey to Chesapeake Bay.

Fascinating stuff!
For those who don't already know it, there are all kinds of =
satellite-tracked critters, including shearwaters and Herring gulls in =
the Bay of Fundy, at http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/ . Scroll down =
the menu on the left side of the screen, and also check out the Archived =
Projects section to see most of the info. relevant to NS.
