Occasionally, in a weather forecast, we see numbers quoted as =
"the normal temperatures for today", "the normal high for today", etc. =
These are long-term average temperatures for a given reporting station, =
with quite a lot of mathematics applied to smooth out the daily =
variations.

I have a table of these Climate Normals for Shearwater Airport, =
just outside Dartmouth. The normal temperatures for today and tomorrow =
are the low point of the annual cycle: the normal maximum at Shearwater =
is about -1 C and the minimum is -10 C.

Starting Monday, the normals begin their slow climb back up =
again, and we are on our way out of the depths of winter. Can Spring be =
far away?
