Pat/Jim,
I haven't seen an answer to your question from anybody, so I will have a =
guess at it.=20
Blue Jays are well known to peck and eat paint from the sides of houses =
and elsewhere. It is presumed that this is in answer to their almost =
constant need for calcium which seems to be higher than in most other =
birds. Latex paints have a calcium component which they find useful in =
those places where much of their food has an acidic basis.=20
This maybe what you are seeing - at least in the absence of another and =
better explanation.=20
Cheers,
John Belbin - Hantsport

Subject: Blue jays question
I hope I haven't broken any protocol by notifying you, but I read =
the NS Birders blog every day and have a question.
=20
For the last four mornings I have been awakened by up to 20 bluejays =
on my deck rails pecking as if they were woodpeckers. There is a green =
tinge on the north side of the rails which is the beginnings of moss. =
They are definitely pecking at the moss, but also at places where there =
is no moss. Yesterday a pair of crows joined them. They only seem to be =
gathering in the early morning. This is my sixth winter in this house =
and it is the first time I have seen this.
=20
I live in the Margarees and we have had quite a few snow squalls =
over the last week.
