I heard an unfamiliar call as I arrived in the parking lot at MSVU this morning. I thought the metallic "chip" was coming from a sparrow and searched through the bushes for a small brown bird. I was awfully surprised when I spotted the big red male cardinal that was making the sound! I watched him poke around through the bushes for a few minutes and then fly to the top of a nearby tree and begin to sing. He began hesitantly, with only a few notes at a time, but was soon pouring out a series of melodic whistles.

A very nice start to my day.
