I received a note from Judith Orr today who reports tree swallows at Union =
Square on Mar. 28=2C 2010. She says swallows=2C but not how many. Gary Sm=
ith had an osprey today in Lunenburg County which was carrying nesting mate=
rial to telephone poles rather then to a nest platform nearby.

This evening I snuck away to a lake at Rhodes Corner for a half hour before=
dark. What a gorgeous evening. So still and reminisent of spring with th=
e peepers and three barred owls giving quite the entertainment=2C iwth two =
territorial males and a female going at it. This was a different lake then=
my report of the other day. So that makes five barred owls within three k=
m. Also of note were 50 common grackles which were over a stillwater there=
and very vocal. I think that this is the most active that I've seen smal=
lmouth bass this early in the season in all of my years of fishing. On the=
plus side brook trout fishing has been the best that I've seen it in years=
. =20
