Yesterday afternoon (1:30-3:00) at Palmeter Woods:
I was somewhat surprised to hear so many warblers singing in the
afternoon. Most expected species were represented but only a few of each.
Of particular note a Canada Warbler sang twice just past the "old
fireplace" in the NW edge of the swamp. Not appropriate habitat so
will probably not stay. It was nice to find a Blackburnian in its usual
spot at the top of the hill near the former Campground.
Butterflies
- 10-12 Whites..all that I looked closely at were "Mustard
Whites".
- 1 Pine Elfin
- 1 Clouded Sulphur
- 2 Spring Azures ( unusually uncommon this year)
Odonates
- my first two of the year. One was apparently a Common Green Darner.
Seemed terribly early but noted in the Guides that this species migrates
from the South so not unusual to find them in early May!! It perched
several times so it was partially hidden and was alert to my presence so
whenever I moved to get a clear photo, it flew.
The other one, a Clubtail, was photographed but I've not had a chance to
settle on a id as yet.

No morels although I'm sure Nancy N. will find some. Only a few
wildflowers in bloom. The forest floor would be quite barren if there
were no Lily of the Valley (nor to a lesser extent, Clintonia). With
their glossy leaves they add a certain elegance to the eye.
