Hi everyone,

We certainly didn't receive the forecasted weather, nor did we
receive the rarities that have shown up on the south and eastern
shores, but...
Yesterday afternoon I walked across the street to the sewer ponds in
Port Williams, Kings County. There were many swallows (25?) and the
best assortment that I have ever seen here. Most were barn swallows,
3-4 tree swallows, a couple of bank swallows, one cliff swallow
(light forehead) and a lone chimney swift. As I was watching them
actively feeding they all suddenly disappeared and I watched as a
peregrine falcon chased one swallow from the feeding flock. I don't
think it was successful, it seemed to fly to the northwest, but I
didn't see where the swallows went, I waited for ten minutes but they
didn't return.

On the pond were only a few mallards and one female hooded merganser,
this bird seems to be all that is left of three that appeared early
last week.

On the eastern side of Hwy 358 as you approach the bridge there is a
flock of canada geese that has built in number over the past month to
approximately sixty birds. When I first noticed them there were
fourteen birds in the flock, they are probably local nesters that are
staging on the silage fields with fresh forage, they do fly to the
river and have flown into the sewer pond, but seem to be a daily
sight in the three fields on the east side of the road to Port Williams.

George
