Our invited presenter is Mi=92kmaq Elder Murdena Marshall of the =20 Eskasoni First Nation in Cape Breton, assisted by Ms Prune Harris. =20 Elder Marshall will provide background and interpretation of a =20 traditional night sky story of =93Muin and the Seven Bird Hunters=94. = This =20 sky story, passed on in the oral tradition of the Mi=92kmaq First =20 Nation, links the annual cycle of the seasons with the movement of the =20= stars and the Mi=92kmaq constellations. The story carries the =20 information to use the seasonal star positions as a calendar to mark =20 the date of the Mi=92kmaq Mid-Winter Feast. The presentation will =20 include a showing of the animated audio/video production of =93Muin and =20= the Seven Bird Hunters=94. This video presentation was first shown at =20= the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa as part of the =20 start up of the 2009 IYA celebrations. The story provides insight and =20= appreciation of the Mi=92kmaq view and understanding of the earth and =20= sky as well as a valuable and memorable lesson of the relationship of =20= the earth=92s seasons and night sky star patterns. Elder Marshall is the spiritual leader of the Mi=92maq people and an =20 authority in traditional Mi=92kmaq culture with a long interest in =20 Mi=92kmaq astronomy. She provided guidance in the production of the =20 animated video of the traditional story of =93Muin and the Seven Bear =20= Hunters=94 ensuring that the traditional Mi=92kmaq understanding of the =20= story was clearly conveyed. Elder Marshall received her Bachelor of =20 Education from the University of New Brunswick and her Masters in =20 Education from Harvard University. She has worked as an educator in =20 the community prior to joining Cape Breton University where she was =20 instrumental in setting up the Integrative Science Program. In this =20 Program students learn Indigenous and Western sciences side by side. =20 Elder Marshall has retired as an Associate Professor in Mi`kmaq =20 Studies from Cape Breton University.Elder Marshall is assisted by Ms =20 Prune Harris M.A. of the Integrative Science Program of Cape Breton =20 University who is knowledgeable in the Mi=92kmaq culture and was =20 involved in the production of the animated story.
