Hi all
I spent Monday, Sept. 20 on Big I., Pictou Co., and had a pleasant day of birding sharing the last 2 hours with Ann Doull.
Some highlights were 3 Ovenbirds in one bino view and shortly after, 3 Hermit Thrushes pished up together. An adult Laughing Gull was present at the east end of the causeway at low tide in the late afternoon. There were 17 American Pipits along the causeway. I had 5 Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 24 Great Blue Herons, 50 Common Terns and 75 Bonaparte's Gulls. In the early morning the strait side was filled with diving Northern Gannets, although most were heading east. At one point I counted 140 in about 15 min. Two male Wood Ducks on McGee pond were coming into breeding plumage. Ann had seen both these ducks and the Laughing Gull over the past week or so. A few sparrows are starting to gather especially White-throats but main sparrow migration is yet to happen
Warblers were in very low numbers with only 1 Black and White, 2 Common Yellowthroat and 22 Yellow-rumped as well as the 3 Ovenbirds. There was a headless beached seal on the main beach attended by an eagle. I had a total of 67 species for the day from the island.

Shorebird summary
Black-bellied Plover 17
Semipalmated Plover 103
Greater Yellowlegs 9
Lesser Yellowlegs 4
Solitary Sandpiper 1
Sanderling 3
Semipalmated Sandpiper 77
Least Sandpiper 2
White-rumped Sandpiper 1
Dunlin 1
Short-billed Dowitcher 22

cheers
Ken
