Niels Holgerson, a children's story from Scandinavia, deals with a thumb 
size boy (penalized for abusing animals by shrinking) traveling with a 
domestic goose and a flock of Gray geese.  
Not that I would expect a little Joey Smith hitching a ride on one of the 
geese, but an escaped domestic white goose teaming up with some wild 
cousins would be a possibility.
