Regarding the gray jay and ignoring the chickadee question, I'll  
opine that gray jays are one of a number of species of the boreal  
forest that seem relatively oblivious to us when we discover them.   
Best example is probably the spruce grouse, but think also of our two  
kinds of 3-toed woodpeckers, whatever their current names are, etc.   
The northern spruce forest is so vast (but of course much less so in  
modern decades -- thus necessary campaigns for protection of large  
swathes from alterations/developments/clear-cutting) -- and  
relatively uninhabited by humans, that it's no wonder that non-human  
(I almost typed "natural") elements feel secure and unthreatened most  
of the time.
