I braved the strong SW wind and pounding waves for 20 mins at Cottage Cove
near Port George this morning. A few Surf scoters and C.eiders were flying
by, and there were many N.gannets far offshore. Way at the limit of my scope
view there were many shearwaters, - at least some of which appeared to be
lighter underneath, so they were probably Greaters - many were flying in
high arcs up over the horizon and then down to water level - from my reading
I gather that this is a field mark for Pterodroma petrels - not that I have
ever seen one - but presumably it was because of the high wind and big
waves. There were also a number of largish alcids flying by - again, too far
out and too windy to make a species ID, but they were certainly Razorbills
or one of the murres. No Harleqiuns visible today.
