Hi Kathleen & All=2C
Just to reassure everyone the Dovekie that was returned to the ocean yes=
terday was in good health and looked able to fly. We only had it indoors fo=
r about 30 minutes while waiting for me to arrive and photograph the bird f=
or my files. I haven't heard what happened at the release yet but I will po=
st that news when I find out how it went. All the best.=20

I think I've said this before on the list=2C but I thought I'd send another=
 reminder.

There are many oceangoing birds (including loons=2C cormorants=2C gannets=
=2C alcids and storm-petrels) that have difficulty taking off from land. So=
metimes healthy individuals get blown to shore and just need to be returned=
to a large body of water. However=2C the majority of seabirds that end up =
on land are injured=2C starving or sick. For example=2C CWRC admits a few g=
rounded gannets every year=2C and we've never had one that wasn't literally=
at death's door when it came in. We've had better luck with alcids=2C thou=
gh not all have been in great shape on admission.

Since grounded seabirds usually have something wrong with them=2C for their=
best chance at survival they should be taken to a rehabilitation centre or=
to a veterinarian experienced with wild birds to at least check if there i=
s something wrong before it is released. Taking such birds to water is cert=
ainly better than leaving them where they are found=2C but if it's possible=
to have them seen by an expert=2C that would be best of all.

I am thankful to read how folk help wildlife like the dovekies. They just n=
eed to be able to fly away from open water and a lot of folks would not kno=
w what to do. Thanks James and Fritz.=20
