Hello Shirley=2C Ron=2C et al.
=20
Thanks for your note. I hope that you don't mind if I forward it to t=
he NatureNS list=2C where most of the discussion on these things occurs. Y=
ou are likely right=2C but it is noticeably darker than the other Red-throa=
ted Loons there. I did make brief trips to the site Monday a.m. and Tuesda=
y p.m.=2C but was unable to get better looks at it either day=2C although I=
could distinguish it from the other loons present on both occasions. On M=
onday=2C the wave action was too much for viewing=2C and all loons except o=
ne typical Red-throated were well out from shore. It=2C at least one Commo=
n Loon=2C and the small=2C dark=2C one were all out to the NE of the wharf.=
Also noted 4 Red-necked Grebes and one Horned Grebe diving in the area.
=20
On Tuesday=2C as Pat Giffin noted=2C viewing conditions were much bette=
r. As well as two each of Common Loon and Red-throated Loon=2C from the wh=
arf area 5 Surf Scoters=2C 1 White-winged Scoter=2C 2 Horned Grebes=2C 1 Re=
d-necked Grebe=2C 2 Harlequin Ducks=2C and the usual assortment of the two =
regular gulls=2C Common Eiders=2C Long-tailed Ducks=2C and Red-breasted Mer=
gansers=2C were visible. From the end of Gordon St.=2C were more of some o=
f these=2C including loons and grebes=2C and several alcids could be seen. =
Most of the latter were beyond the abilities of my optics (or eyes)=2C but=
I did make out one Razorbill and 3 Common Murres. What I think was the od=
d loon was directly out from the light=2C a little too far for me. It woul=
d have been great for someone with a Kowa or equivalent scope. I have not =
seen any Purple Sandpipers there yet=2C but did not walk the shore.

Hi:

=20

I have seen the bird that Wayne mentions on several occasions over the past=
two weeks and it appears from my observations to be a Red-throated Loon. =
At times there have been two present. As previously mentioned=2C I was at =
the Margaretsville wharf on Sunday until about 1530=2C so it is probable th=
at we were viewing the same bird.

This afternoon=2C about 15:50=2C I saw a small loon not far from the wharf =
at Margaretsville whose head=2C nape=2C and back were so dark that my first=
impression was Pacific Loon. I could see no light flecks on the back=2C b=
ut it did hold its bill tilted up like a Red-throated=2C although the bill =
itself appeared straight. The light was fading and it disappeared behind s=
ome rocks before I could note more details. I note that Sibley=2C unlike o=
ther field guides that I checked=2C shows a Red-throated Loon with a dark w=
inter plumage=2C so perhaps that is what it was. The weather does not look=
 promising tomorrow=2C but if anyone=2C especially with a camera=2C can get=
over there to check it=2C it could be worth while. The only other water b=
irds noted were the usual gulls=2C Common Eiders=2C Red-breasted Mergansers=
=2C and Long-tailed Duck=2C but the tide was fairly low.
