type="cite">Oh, I so agree with that. So much so that I have a shovel
in my car with me and push roadkill to the side of the road or in the
ditch if I can. We have has 2 eagles in the past month that were killed
scavenging in the middle of the road.

Sandy Hiltz's email regarding dead owls hit by cars reminds me
of a conversation I had one day with a naturalist in the Alberta
Rockies. He commented that most people don't think twice about
throwing apple cores, fruit peels, etc. out their vehicle windows
because these items are biodegradable. But he said what happens is
this food attracts rodents/small mammals who go onto the road or close
to the road to eat our fruit cores...then owls fly down to catch these
rodents that are munching on the apple core, etc. He said this
practice causes many owls to be killed by vehicles.

It seemed to make sense. Any thoughts on this?

Yesterday in the late afternoon while driving between Metegan
and Yarmouth on the 101 I had the unfortunate experience of seeing 2
Barred Owls hit by vehicles and killed within 5 minutes of each other.
The first one literally died in my hands and the second as hit by a
large truck and was killed instantly.. These owls were about a
kilometer a part.
