Hi All=2C
Not to be curmudgeonly in the Christmas season but the money allocated t=
o improvements of CSI's South Side Beach seems to have little or nothing to=
do with improving bird habitat and protection and lots to do with improvin=
g tourism infrastructure and access to the beach.=20
If the money had been spent on PIPL monitors=2C on ways to keep people's=
dogs on leashes and/or keeping ATVs off the beach then that would be money=
more constructively spent in helping the CSI IBA. It seems to me these exp=
enditures will actually make the PIPL and other birds situation worse not b=
etter.=20
I'll be very happy if someone can prove me wrong. All the best.

Popular birding beach receives $22=2C500 in improvements=20
By BRIAN MEDEL=20

December 26=2C 2010 Chronicle Herald

A Nova Scotia beach designated as an important birding area will be even mo=
re accessible in 2011 following $22=2C500 in improve=ADments.

The South Side Beach on Shel=ADburne County=92s Cape Sable Is=ADland is a r=
ecognized bird area.

Five migratory species=2C including the endangered piping plover=2C spend t=
ime there each year.

In the nearby town of Clarks Harbour=2C tourists often ask staff at the tow=
n=92s visitor information centre how to get to Cape Sable Island=92s variou=
s beaches=2C said Mayor Leigh Stoddart.

The South Side Beach =93didn=92t have really good access=2C" Stod=ADdard sa=
id. But =93now with the addition of the boardwalk to the beach=2C along wit=
h the picnic area and the parking lot . . . it has made a huge difference."

Because of the just-finished improvements=2C people can get to the white sa=
ndy beach easily using the boardwalk=2C which also allows people who use wh=
eel=ADchairs to visit=2C the mayor said.

Parking will also be easier be=ADcause the upgraded parking lot can accommo=
date about 30 cars.

The parking lot improvements=2C washroom upgrades=2C improved signage=2C pi=
cnic tables and board=ADwalk were accomplished with an $11=2C000 federal gr=
ant and $6=2C000 from the Cape Sable Important Bird Area=2C an internationa=
l con=ADservation organization=2C said a government news release.

Sable Fish Packers Ltd. owns the beach and leases it to the South Side Beac=
h Association. It gave $2=2C000 to the project while just over $3=2C500 was=
given by the Municipality of the District of Barrington and the town of Cl=
arks Harbour=2C said the release.

Citizens and municipal coun=ADcils are lobbying Ottawa to have the shabby l=
ighthouse painted=2C something Stoddart has been working on for five years.=
Feder=ADal Fisheries and Oceans minister Gail Shea has indicated the light=
=ADhouse would be painted in 2011. =
