Hi all, and happy Holidays

Here is what I saw this morning at Grand Pre -

Bald Eagle 5
Northern Harrier 2
Merlin 1
Herring Gull 10
Great Black-backed Gull 30
Short-eared Owl 7

The Short-eared owls were in 2 groups, and were found a few days ago by
Bernard Forsythe, and were there this morning. They roost in ditches along
the dirt roads on the east side of the dykes. The roads may or may not be
passable depending on the amount of snow or mud (they were OK this morning).
They are best seen just before dusk, when they are hunting. Please make sure
they are not chased or harassed to get closer looks. If the ground doesn't
get covered with a layer of ice, there seem to plenty of voles around, and
they might stick around.

I have started a new photo gallery of NS winter birds here -

http://richard-s.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds/NS-Birds-Winter-2010-11/15206192_d3ALf#1137647532_ifAAi

and have included some pictures of one of the owls, digiscoped from inside
my vehicle. There are also some Dovekies etc. from the Brier CBC, the Tundra
Swan and others, and I will add to it as the Winter goes on.

When I got home, there were ~ 80 Bohemian Waxwings in a far poplar tree
visible from the kitchen window.

Richard
