Freezing rain has caused birds to die while flying - the same icing =
problem that aircraft can have. There was a huge die-off of buffleheads =
leaving the prairies in November 1940 who literally dropped from the sky =
from icing. Buffleheads wait to migrate until the last minute before =
the lakes and waterways freeze. If not timed properly they can get =
caught in severe weather.
I will wait to hear what they can determine about these blackbirds.

Subject: [NatureNS] many many blackbirds fall dead from the sky
Hi all,
I posted this same story last night around 9 pm, but it didn't show =
up. I was looking through the internet headlines last night and came =
across it through BBC. Shortly after that I heard it on the 9pm news on =
CBC.=20
From what I've read, some initial thoughts were: (And these aren't =
mine, just what I've gleaned from the world wide interweb )
- hail at high altitudes ( really?)
- New Year's Eve fireworks scared them to death- as they they flew off =
quickly. ( again, really? )
- tornadoes were through the area earlier=20
- sonic booms
- probably not poisoning as it was only thousands of red winged =
blackbirds
It will be interesting to see how this story progresses. Or if the =
media feels it is important enough.

Here is a note from CBS news and CNN:
" Robby King, a wildlife officer for the state Game and Fish =
Commission, collected about 65 dead birds on Saturday. They will be sent =
for testing to the state Livestock and Poultry Commission lab and the =
National Wildlife Health Center lab in Madison, Wis."
CNN "(Karen) Rowe (an ornithologist) said Sunday there was evidence =

Note that the birds started falling in a specific area shortly after =
11pm on New Year's Eve.
Cheers, Joan
PS And in some places balloons filled with wishes are released into =
the air on New Year's Eve. I wonder how many creatures we kill with our =
good wishes?
