On New Year's Day my sister was on board her plane at the Stanfield
Airport, waiting to take off for Montreal, when she saw something
that interested her. She told me that it was a big chubby bird,
lightish brown and maybe gray, with a fan-shaped tail. Definitely not
a pheasant, as it didn't have a long tail. She knows flickers too,
and was confident that it wasn't that either. She said that it was
pecking around, chicken-like, in the open area beyond the
runway. Sounds like a grouse to me, but which species would it be
out there? I can't help but think that either might be possible.
