Hi Everyone;

Bob McDonald and I did a little birding today. We tried for the Hawk Owl and Gyrfalcon at Hartlen Point but didn't see either of them. Where is Mike when you need him?? We did see 3 N. Harriers, a Rough-legged Hawk and a Kestrel on Devil's Island. We also saw 3 Killdeer, one on the golf course and two on the beach; also an Iceland Gull and some RB Mergansers.

Behind Fong's Restaurant we ran into Judy O'Brien and Don MacNeill looking for the Lark Sparrow. 5 minutes after they left, a large flock of House sparrows flew in and the Lark Sparrow was with them. (We tried to find the Thai Restaurant where you guys said you were going for lunch, but no luck - sorry!) No sign of the Chat.

Directions: Pull into the parking lot of Fong's Restaurant, across from the Funeral Home on Cole Harbour Road just before Bissett Road. Park on the right hand side. The birds are coming to a feeder behind the first house on the left of John Stewart Drive. Best vantage point is to look through the chain link fence that runs behind Fong's parking lot - or go to your right through a gate in the chainlink fence. The birds and the feeder can also be seen through the fence just to the left of the shed.

At Sullivans Pond we ran into Clarence Stevens, Sr. who helped us locate the male Gadwall and the Eurasian Wigeon. Thanks, Clarence! Some Coots were there as well, down by the island. Just before we left we met David Schlosberg.

Across the street in Findley Park we had a Hairy Woodpecker and a Wht-br. Nuthatch. At Tuft's Cove we saw Bufflehead and Com Goldeneye. No Black-headed Gulls, though. Has anyone been seeing them this winter?

Finally we stopped on Ashdale which runs off Dutch Village Road or Titus Street in Fairview. We parked behind the little white church and walked down the path which leads to a tangled area behind the houses on Ashdale. Close to Dutch Village Road we found the Yellow-breasted Chat visiting a feeder behind a house on DV Road. Bob made note of the house number. Perhaps he'll post it? The house is next to the empty lot where the old Halifax West High School used to be.

Cheers;
Suzanne
