From: John Sollows

Date: Feb. 20/11

A propos signs of spring:

I heard a cardinal singing on a balmy day earlier in the past week, here on
the Wyman Road, just south of Yarmouth. Both the Mr. and the Mrs. Have been
around all winter. Considering our banana belt climate down here, maybe
that is not so strange!

Subject: [NatureNS] More From yesterday.

More notes from yesterday.

Song sparrows everywhere practicing their songs.

At Front Centre, five male black-capped chickadees with their FeeBee calls.
The male with the loudest FeeBee call gets the territory.

Male mallards everywhere with battle royals and one incident of pecking at
windows. Territorial actions.

Red-breasted nuthatches making their calls that you usually hear in the
spring, which I suspect denotes territory.

Hopefully, all signs that spring is on the way.

With the large groups of common goldeneyes at Bayport yesterday afternoon,
there was a male Barrows Goldeneye.

Also at Bayport a female northern pintail.

James R. Hirtle
Bayport
