It was a pleasure to welcome Tuma to the Cape Breton Naturalists meeting
last week. Sixty one people were enthralled by his images and stories
about birds, photography, finding Mi'kmaq names for birds and the
Mi'kmaq language. It engendered lots of discussion on birds, Mi'kmaq
culture and how to engage young people in the out-of-doors among many
other things. I am sure this was the sort of meeting that Pixie
Williams envisioned when she started our club many years ago.

Hi Everyone:

=20

I made my presentation to the Cape Breton Naturalists on Wednesday to a
packed house of around 50+. I think it went well-those who were there
can chime in.

=20

On Friday, Nick and I went birding with the Murrants and despite it
being a bit slow, we did find 28 species:

=20

Location: Gabarus Highway: 6 Grey Jays, 1 BC Chickadee, American
Crows, Starlings, 1 Pileated Woodpecker (lifer) and Mourning Doves.

=20

Marion Bridge: 10 American Black Ducks

=20

Gabarus: 50+Red Breasted Mergansers, 50+Greater and Lesser
Scaups, 30+Common Goldeneyes, 10+Common Loons, BB Gulls, Herring Gulls,
2 Black Guillmots, 30+ B Waxwings, Starlings, 6+ Snow Buntings, 6 Surf
Scoters, 6 WW Scoters, one Black Scoter, American Black Ducks, American
Crows, Rock Doves, 20+ Common Mergansers, 2 White Winged Crossbills, 1
Blue Jay.

=20

Point Michaud-10+ WW Scoters, 10+Common Eiders, Herring Gulls, BB Gulls,
3 BH Gulls, 20+ Canada Geese, 1 Bald Eagle, and 1 Northern Shrike.

=20

On Saturday-we drove to the Northside (Oak Farm Road) where we met up
with Mr. Wayne Gouthro, the fella who feeds the eagles. Mr. Gouthro was
feeding and we took a few pictures of 10+ Eagles, BB Gulls, Herring
Gulls, 1 Iceland Gull (Kulmien ssp), 1 Glaucous Gull plus American
Crows, Ravens and 1 American Robin. Apparently there will be a story
about Mr. Gouthro and the feeding of the Eagles in Saltscapes magazine
soon. He tells us that he has at least 16 Eagles coming regularly and
recognize him. We can attest to this because as soon as his truck came
down the driveway the Eagles flew out of the trees and onto the ice.

=20

Englishtown: spotted one RB Merganser, 2 American Black Ducks plus 2
Bald Eagles.

=20

West Bay Road-6 American Black Ducks and Herring Gulls. =20

=20

Port Hawskbury: 1 Black-headed Gull, 6 Glaucuous Gulls, 4 Iceland Gulls,
BB Gulls, Herring Gulls, 6 Greater Scaups, 10+ American Black Ducks, 1
Common Loon, 6 Common Goldeneyes.

=20

At Big Island in Pictou-we saw 2 Bald Eagles, Herring Gulls.
