MARCH 11, 2011 - Today I checked the bald eagle nest at Kentville along Talon Drive in the Eagle Landing new subdivision just off Middle Dyke Road -- no eagle on nest. MARCH 14, 2011 - Recent birds etc. at our feeders: 7 pheasants (2 cocks, one much more gorgeous than the other, plus 5 females), 3 cardinals (1m,2f), 1 red-breasted nuthatch (very regular now at peanut feeder), at least 4 black-capped chickadees, plus a song sparrow, several each of juncos and white-throated sparrows, mourning doves and blue jays and crows only occasional now, and a red squirrel (for a few days there were two red squirrels, but I think one was chased away). Jake MacDonald phoned today to report his first red-winged blackbird, a solitary male that is flashing his red often, on lower Maple Ave. in Wolfville. I drove around northeast of Port Williams along Magee Road and east- end Church St., but could not find the sandhill crane. I saw a raven carrying a stick across Starr's Point Road, east of Pt. Wms., and the red-tailed hawk nest near the south end of Magee Road is apparently not occupied yet. MARCH 15, 2011 - I checked the raven nest just north of the Acadia Arena in small woodlot of planted pines. I could not see any adults near or in the nest, but I had no binoculars. In late afternoon in our neighborhood in Wolfville, a mourning dove "sang" and a cock pheasant crowed. MARCH 16, 2011 - I drove around and checked several eagle and raven nest sites in eastern King's County, but saw no sandhill crane and no early-looking robins or grackles or red- winged blackbirds. Five bald eagle nests with apparently incubating or pseudo-incubating single adult eagles on/in them: - n. of Noggins Farm Market, Greenwich; - Eye Road, just e. of Wolfville; - fairway no. 14 on KenWo golf course; - Canard St./Rte. 341, e. of Rte. 358; - Starr's Point, Cox farm, ne. of e. end of Church St. One bald eagle nest with one adult perched nearby and then standing in and "redecorating" nest: - directly south of greenhouse adjacent to Stirling's Farm Market, Greenwich. Two bald eagle nests with no adults seen on or near them yet: - Evangeline family campground at north Grand Pre (Long Island); - Eagle Landing subdivision in north Kentville. Two raven nests checked had no ravens on or near them: - Starr's Point, Cox farm, metal grain elevator, nothing on nest and nest still quite small; - Belcher St., east of Pt. Wms., last-year's nest is small and unoccupied. Port Williams sewage ponds: I approached stealthily, to no avail, since there were only 10 mallards there. And both ponds are nearly all open water now.
